The story so far

Short version

Albotherm is a Bristol-based materials start-up developing environmentally intelligent materials for buildings and greenhouses. Clear when cool, its materials turn reflective white when temperatures rise, then return to clear when conditions cool again – activated entirely by heat and requiring no electricity. The same response addresses two markets: cooler, more comfortable buildings and healthier, higher-yielding crops.

Albotherm is a Bristol-based materials start-up developing environmentally intelligent materials for buildings and greenhouses. Albotherm’s materials are clear when cool and turn reflective white when temperatures rise, blocking excess heat – entirely passively, without electricity, moving parts, or manual control – then return to clear when conditions cool again. The transition temperature is tuneable between 0°C and 45°C, allowing the material to be configured for different climates and applications.

In buildings, the technology is designed to protect occupants from overheating on the hottest days, keeping homes, offices and schools comfortable while reducing reliance on air conditioning. In greenhouses, it is designed to protect crops from heat stress, supporting healthier, higher-yielding harvests. In both cases, the same effect applies: protection from overheating without the trade-off of losing daylight in cool conditions.
