A heat-activated window film for existing glazing.

Albotherm’s smart window film helps reduce solar heat gain when glazing gets hot – without wiring, power or replacing the glass.

The film is transparent at cooler temperatures. As the glazing heats up, it gradually switches to a diffuse white state, reflecting solar energy away from the building, before it passes through the glass. As temperatures cool, the film returns to clear.

Designed for residential, commercial, and public buildings, it is applied directly to existing glass as a retrofit solution to overheating.

The problem most solutions do not solve

Glazing can create a difficult balance for buildings: you want natural daylight and views, but direct sunlight can cause uncomfortable indoor temperatures and increase cooling demand.

Many existing solutions tackle this by reducing sunlight all the time, imagine wearing sunglasses inside… or by relying on active, energy hungry systems.

Fixed tints and low-e materials can reduce solar gain year-round, including when you want the natural warmth of the sun in winter months. Motorised blinds require moving parts, controls and, in many buildings, integration with the building management system. Electrochromic glazing uses electricity and requires a control system to change state.

Common questions

It is a window film. Unlike smart glass, it does not require the existing glazing to be replaced and does not require any electricity to work. The film is applied directly to the surface of existing glazing, making it a retrofit solution for buildings that already have windows in place.

When the film is transparent, it maintains a clear appearance. When activated, it becomes diffuse white, so visibility through the glazing is reduced to almost opaque at its peak. The exact appearance and switching behaviour can be tuned depending on the application.

Our current building product is designed around application to the external surface of the glazing, so that it can respond to the heat before solar energy is absorbed by the glass. This is an important part of how the technology works and distinguishes it from conventional internal window films.
